Beer of the Week: Turtle Town

Two longtime friends and fermentationists from Hodad's Brewing and Resident Brewing tag-team to craft one outstanding hazy IPA

Some collaboration brewing sessions are meetings of the minds which inform their participants about how things are done at different breweries. Then there are collabs that are more about getting good friends together to craft something special. While the creators of this week’s featured beer ‒ Marlow Myrmo from Hodad’s Brewing and Bill Lindsay from Resident Brewing ‒ may full well have learned a thing or two about brewing procedures, they already know everything they need to about one another thanks to years of friendship dating back well before their careers as commercial brewers. The two initially met through hospitality industry connections when they were working at restaurants in Ocean Beach. The pair became fast friends and have spent the past decade hanging, golfing, sharing pints and going head-to-head in fantasy sports leagues. It wasn’t long after Lindsay opened his Miramar nanobrewery, Thunderhawk Alements, that Myrmo got to work constructing a production brewery for his longtime employer and legendary local burger enterprise, Hodad’s. Since going pro, the duo have taken every opportunity to brew together. The result of their latest collab is Turtle Town Hazy IPA. Produced and canned at Hodad’s Brewing’s Serra Mesa HQ, it has the opaque appearance of a foggy New England IPA minus the cloying viscosity. Aromas of navel orange and super-ripe peach give way to more of the same, plus a touch of orange pith on the palate. It’s a high-quality IPA worthy of pairing with an equally juicy Hodad’s Guido Burger…or a Brew Pub Burger from Resident’s sister-op, The Local, for that matter!

This is our third collaboration beer with Resident Brewing. I’m good friends with Resident’s Head Brewer, Bill Lindsay, so any excuse to hang out with him is a great one, especially when it means collaborating on another beer. Turtle Town is a smooth, juicy and crushable hazy IPA that can be enjoyed in the summertime heat. It is loaded with Nelson, Eclipse and Sabro Incognito hops, a combination that brings out flavors and aroma of tangerine, mango and gooseberries. The inspiration behind Turtle Town is our shared love for the ocean. As an avid waterman, I wanted to pay homage to our coastal ‘residents.’ From the Pacific green sea turtle, to our state fish, the Garibaldi, the can art features a few of our many amazing neighbors just under the surface. #iliketurtles”
