Beer of the Week: Shoot from the Hip

Seek Beer Co. says "here's to good friends, this beer is kinda special" with a dark Mexican-style lager honoring a colleague's next chapter

There’s no industry quite like craft brewing. Beyond the sharing of would-be trade secrets, ingredients and equipment, and beer companies’ unabashed affinity for one another and their products, individuals from different businesses see each other beyond their professional affiliations and celebrate them as if they were their own. Take, for instance, Steven Teran, who recently took the reins at Chula Vista Brewery after moving on from North Park brewpub, The Original 40 Brewing. While at the latter, he made friends with contemporaries at Seek Beer Co., and in celebration of his new gig, owner Dave Ohmer invited Teran back to his old stomping grounds to work on this week’s featured beer, Shoot from the Hip. A dark Mexican-style lager, it’s perfect for the suddenly sunny season, especially if you’re looking for something a little more complex than your average crusher. Caramel, toffee and the slightest nuttiness not only offer treats for one’s taste buds, but add to this beer’s food pairability. So, there’s a lot to like about this beer, but best of all is the camaraderie that birthed it.

Introducing our new Mexican dark lager, which was crafted in collaboration with Chula Vista Brewery to celebrate our friend and colleague Steven’s new role as head brewer at that South Bay business. We were excited to combine our shared experiences making darker lagers to try to brew our best one yet, and used both new and tried-and-true techniques to come up with the smoothest malt profile possible. With balanced malt flavor and a crisp, dry finish, Shoot From The Hip provides the perfect harmony of malt sweetness and subtle hop character. Ideal for summer enjoyment, its malty, biscuity aromas and hint of roast provide an inviting sensory experience. A velvety texture conveys flavors of toffee and caramel ahead of a refreshingly crisp finish. Cheers to good friends and even better beer!”
