Beer of the Week: Everyday California

Mission Brewing revives a local-biz collaboration, teaming with a La Jolla-based adventure and apparel brand to craft something "coastal"

Many were disappointed when Resident Brewing closed its doors earlier this year. An award-winning eight-year-old operation based in downtown San Diego with a satellite taproom in Chula Vista and a presence at numerous craft-centric bars throughout the county, the business had plenty of fans. Among them was the team at La Jolla-based company, Everyday California. In 2017, the coastal adventure and apparel brand teamed with Resident to have its brew crew conjure up a West Coast IPA called, what else…Everyday California. It was a solid beer that fans of both businesses took to, but sadly it disappeared right along with the company that crafted it in January. Fortunately, there are plenty of quality brewing enterprises that enjoy the beer industry’s collaborative nature, and it wasn’t long before one of them, Miramar-based Mission Brewing, volunteered as tribute, taking up the mantle and crafting this week’s featured, a brand-new version of Everyday California. Before I go any further, you should brace yourself. This beer is not an IPA. But fear not, for what it lacks in hop bite, it makes up for in tropical fruitiness. A bouquet reminiscent of Carmen Miranda’s headgear gives off delightful scents of mango, papaya and peach. On the palate, you’ll get all that plus a touch of sweet orange, making a flavor profile which, like this “coastal” blonde ale 5.5% alcohol-by-volume, is perfect for lengthy days spent enjoying SoCal’s sunny weather. A year-round offering, the beer can be found not only at Mission’s quintet of San Diego taprooms (that’s not a typo…see below), but also Everyday California’s stores in La Jolla and up north in Huntington Beach.

When Resident Brewing closed, local La Jolla-based Everyday California needed a new partner for their collaborative Coastal Ale. At the same time, we were developing a new tropical blonde ale. It was bright, crisp and fruit-forward, but we hadn’t quite found the right branding to attach to it. I ended up reaching out with a cold call and the Everyday California team, and that led to them coming over to share some beers while we came up with a plan. We merged ideas, refined the concept and realized our companies had a lot in common. A partnership was born. We kept a similar vibe on the can with some Mission-style tweaks, but crafted a completely new liquid: a tropical blonde brewed with light notes of mango and orange for a fruity-yet-refreshing taste that truly fits the ‘Coastal Ale’ moniker. Everyday California hit the market three weeks ago and is gaining popularity quickly. And for us at Mission, its ended up being a perfect expression of our 2022 rebrand, which is all about celebrating craft, the San Diego community and coastal adventure. “
