Beer of the Week: Beat LA

More than 30 years in, San Diego Brewing Co. cans its very first beer, selecting a lager that's game-day ready and "brewed for the rivalry"

Beer of the Week header

Let’s begin by addressing the blue, white and scarcely red elephant in the room. The Dodgers heartily trounced our Padres last weekend. Thankfully, the Friars had spent the week prior building up wins and getting above L.A. in the standings, otherwise the NL West pennant race might well be decided by now. As a native San Diegan and lifelong Pads fan, I am used to spirit-breaking performances, particularly when it comes to the Doyers. I realize this is only a temporary setback and revel in the fact that, unlike last year’s playoffs, when our team’s bats went the way of the brut IPA, we get another crack at our rivals this weekend. Three days, three games and one more shot at showing Dave Roberts and his stacked deck of bank-breakers we can not only hold our own against them but (as plenty of teams have proven since the All-Star break) defeat them. Trade deadline wheeling and dealing shored up the Padres’ offensive deficiencies in left field and behind the plate while bolstering what was already the best bullpen in baseball. Once King is back (and maybe even Musgrove come playoff time…yes, we are going to be playing in October), the Pads will have all of their starting pitching healthy. This could very well be the year the home team puts it all together. Heck, they at least have a decent, logical shot at doing so. Having suffered through so many seasons where that wasn’t even a remote possibility, I know weekends like this, where our guys have the opportunity to compete at this level, are something special, something worth relishing. I plan to do so with this week’s featured beer, Beat LA Lager. Aptly brewed by the county’s namesake brewpub, San Diego Brewing Co. (SDBC), this American lager is low in alcohol, light on the palate and downright refreshing. In other words, perfectly suited for nine or more innings of hardcore rivalry-charged baseball. It’s also the first beer in the 32-year history of that Mission Valley mainstay to be made available to-go in cans. So whether you’re elbow-to-elbow with fellow Friar Faithful or praying for a Padre power surge from your couch, you’ll have a beer with a moniker matching what the crowds at Petco Park will be chanting all weekend long!

Beat LA is a sun-bright, crisp 5.2% (alcohol-by-volume) San Diego lager that pours with the golden intensity of Petco Park under stadium lights. Behind its clean, refreshing palate lies a subtle whisper of lime ‒ a nod to the rivalry’s tangy edge. Every sip is a chant in liquid form, igniting the ‘Beat L.A.’ battle cry that Padres fans roar at home games ‒ once rarely heard, now the thunderous heartbeat of every San Diego vs. L.A. showdown.  Whether you’re tailgating outside the ballpark or riding the wave of a tight game, this beer is a walk-off home run! Brewed for the Rivalry, because rivalries are fun…and delicious.”
