Beer of the Week: Highwayman
Hops-and-music-driven Vista rookie operation, The Roadies Brewing, releases a new hazy IPA based on a hit from a country supergroup
Just like beer, music has the magical ability to bring people together and, through mutual appreciation, strengthen relationships. I count myself lucky to have some live-music buddies that I can expect to see at performances by bands and acts we’re both fans of. It extends into the industry and even includes a number of San Diego brewery staffers. The owners of The Roadies Brewing definitely understand the galvanizing nature of beer and music. Their business is equally devoted to both, with a 10-barrel brewhouse pumping out a varied selection of liquid assets and a sizable stage in their Vista tasting room playing host to talent spanning just about every genre each week. On top of that, The Roadies’ beers are named after popular song titles and lyrics. Take, for instance, this week’s featured beer, Highwayman. With a punchy peach bouquet, and pronounced notes of apricot and passion fruit on the taste buds, it’s a newly introduced hazy IPA sharing the name of a song that almost shares the name of the band that performed it, The Highwaymen. That supergroup included Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson and Willie Nelson. Given the presence of that last guy, one has to wonder how Nelson hops or some incredibly dank varietal was not included in this beer, but the overall quality of Highwayman makes the absence of such a cutesy (not to mention obvious) botanical nod easy to overlook.
Highwayman is a pale yellow hazy IPA crafted with a generous amount of oats and an abundance of juicy, tropical, dank hops. Double dry-hopped with Luminosa, Krush and Nectaron, this brew bursts with vibrant flavors of tropical, citrus and luscious stone fruit. Each sip is like floating through a glass full of hoppy clouds.”
