El Segundo / Fremont Peculiar Habits | West Coast IPA (6.2%): Two heavyweights of the West Coast team up once again for a lovely West Coast IPA. The hops of New Zealand show no sign of fatigue ‒ drinkers just cannot get enough of them. Peculiar Habits features a gorgeously rendered illustration of the Hooded Oriole (and even throws in the Linnaean name, Icterus Cucullatus) for all you members of the Audubon Society out there. This IPA is entirely hopped with Antipodean varietals, namely Motueka, Nelson and Riwaka, replete with aromas of peach rings, limeade and a gentle grassiness.

Everywhere Beautiful Something | Helles Lager (4.8%): Sometimes an uncomplicated beer is all that is called for. The recurring release Beautiful Something from our friends at Everywhere Beer up in Orange is just the ticket! A soft and welcoming pale lager brewed with Pilsner malt and Hallertau Mittelfrüh ‒ who could ask for anything more? This is a beer whose name really does say it all.

Off Color Yuzu Fierce | Yuzu Berliner Weisse (3.8%): Chicago’s extraordinary craft beer scene is sprawling, mercurial and welcoming enough to handle a healthy eccentricity. Having left Goose Island after their acquisition by AB InBev, John Laffler opened Off Color in 2013 and began brewing one of the wildest array of creations seen yet in that city. With whimsical pen-ink artwork and cheerful insouciance (sample text from list of ingredients: “HOPS: A little”), Off Color specializes in farmhouse ales and low-ABV sour beers. Yuzu Fierce is an example of the latter, a riff on “Fierce”, their fantastic recipe for a traditional Berliner Weisse. The base edition already exhibits lemony lactic acid notes from the kettle-souring process, but this iteration turns the dial up on those characteristics with an infusion of yuzu fruit. Truly a tart lemonade for adults!
