Cellarmaker / There Does Not Exist Foreign Object | West Coast IPA (7%): How does Cellarmaker Brewing do it? Week after week, a new round of incredible West Coast IPAs appear on the sales-sheet at their distributor Lime Ventures, only to disappear just as quickly. To maintain such a stacked brewing schedule while still keeping the quality so high is no mean feat. This week’s new arrival from Berkeley is a collab with There Does Not Exist out of San Luis Obispo. Foreign Object is replete with Citra, Nectaron, Nelson and Simcoe, with some old-school Cascade thrown in for good measure. The can-art is something to behold all by itself: mysterious hooded figures wander a sandy alien world landscape with a crystalline mountain looming in the distance. At once familiar and disquieting, it resembles nothing so much as an album cover by the stoner metal band Sleep or others of that ilk.
Schilling Alexandr | Czech Pilsner (5%): This spring I spent some time in New England, visiting friends and family across three states. Compared to our California environs, the distances there are minuscule! One of the best beers enjoyed upon that getaway was this Czech Pilsner, served on a Lukr tap at the Pour Farm in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Schilling Beer Co. is located in New Hampshire, in a little town called Littleton abutting the Connecticut River that forms the border with Vermont. They make absolutely stellar lagers of all stripes ‒ longtime readers may recall my enthusiastic review of their fellow core beer Jakobus, a German-style Pils that first materialized around here last May. Fremont Double Barrel B-Bomb | Bourbon Barrel-aged Winter Ale (16.7%): Once upon a time, Seattle’s Fremont Brewing made a malty winter ale known as Abominable. Some time later, they hit upon the brilliant idea to put it away in used bourbon barrels. What emerged was initially known as “Bourbon Barrel-Aged Abominable”, soon shortened to “B-Bomb”. With beautiful artwork depicting a yeti in full roar (as in “Abominable Snowman”), this beer has seen many iterations in the intervening years since. This very special edition has spent a year each in two separate rounds of used bourbon barrels ‒ Elijah Craig at first, followed by Woodford Reserve. This is a mightily powerful beer, suitable for splitting!
