A very special Pride edition of the column this week!
Almanac Love | Hazy IPA (6.1%): Love is a universal constant, and also a year-round hazy IPA with a rotating hop-bill from Almanac Beer Co. in the Bay Area. Around this time of the year, the version released is bedecked in rainbow colors and brewed in support of the Oakland LBGTQ Community Center in that selfsame city’s Lake Merritt district. This year’s Pride edition of Love is dry-hopped with Citra, Mosaic and Sabro. Love is love ‒ happy Pride to all!
Wayfinder Party Time | German Pilsner (5.3%): Party time is right! From my neighborhood of University Heights, it is a straightforward walk down to Hillcrest where the festivities kick off and run all weekend. This beer is a question of self-identity, for where can one draw the line between a dry-hopped German Pilsner and an Italian Pilsner? Much like the age-old conundrum about porters and stouts, it really comes down to whatever the brewer wishes to call it. Party Time falls into the first stylistic category by its own self-description, with classic Noble hops providing herbal lift. The rainbow in this entry can be found on the label, drenched with color saturation.
Urban Roots Guys, Gals & Non-Binary Pals | Hazy Pale Ale (5.3%): Exploding the gender binary through beer? What a delightful plan! Urban Roots Brewery & Smokehouse in Sacramento makes excellent beer and stays true to their values and ethics ‒ it needn’t be just one way or another. This hazy pale is dry-hopped with Citra, Ekuanot and Mosaic, and refuses to be categorized unduly!
