The theme this week is pizza!
Cellarmaker / Other Half Double Dough, Extra Cheddar, Broccoli Stuffed Crust | Hazy IPA (7%): There has been a profusion of well-respected California craft breweries expanding into the pizza realm of late. Locally, North Park Beer Co. offers pies alongside LUKR-poured beers at their Crown Point location, while Beachwood Brewing kneads the dough at their Huntington Beach tasting room. But Cellarmaker Brewing predates them both with their Bernal Heights pizza joint (not far from my birthplace neighborhood of the Excelsior) in San Francisco, with a second one near Jack London Square in Oakland. In conjunction with fellow pizza fanatics Other Half Brewing out of Brooklyn, this hazy collaborative IPA leans heavily on tropical varietals: Galaxy, Krush, Nelson and Strata.
Off Color Crispy Beer For Pizza | Italian-style Pilsner (5%): I am deeply fond of Off Color Brewing, the irreverent Chicago operation with the pen-and-ink iconography and plucky little mouse avatar. Its contribution to the world of Italian Pilsner is Crispy Beer For Pizza, a hop-backed lager with herbal tones reminiscent of classic pizza seasonings. Packaged in delightfully small 12-ounce cans, this one is suitable to pick up a six-pack for pizza night!
Pizza Port Amigo | Mexican-style Lager (5%): While many of today’s pizza-and-beer operations began life as breweries first, Pizza Port did so the other way around! Universally popular in San Diego and the coastal communities, Pizza Port needs no introduction. But debuting an addition to their core lineup is news! Amigo is a longtime draft favorite that has made the transition to 16-ounce cans and nails the Mexican lager category precisely. ¡Por supuesto!
