Chuckanut Italian Pilsner | Italian Pilsner (4.9%): Tipo Pils Day looms! We are spending the month of March honoring the 30th anniversary of this iconic beer from Lombardy. Located about halfway between Milan and the shores of Lake Como, Birrificio Italiano has inspired a whole generation of brewers with their dry-hopped German Pilsner recipe, refashioned in retrospect as the ur-Italian Pilnser. Chuckanut Brewery from Washington state has a terrific rendition of this hop-forward style, with dual-purpose Hallertau Perle and Tradition in the bittering and classic Noble varietals Tettnanger and Saaz on the aromatic side. Cin-cin!
O’Hara’s Irish Red | Irish Red Ale (4.3%): The craft beer industry in the Republic of Ireland has been a bit slower to emerge than in the United States, but nonetheless a number of quality producers have begun to make names for themselves. One of the most venerable independent firms is O’Hara’s, located in County Carlow, which has been brewing for almost 30 years! Coincidentally or not, they are one of the very few craft breweries from the Emerald Isle that can be sourced here in San Diego. Their Irish Red is a coppery umber-toned ale with a notable cocoa tinge on the finish. Sláinte!
O’Hara’s Irish Stout | Irish Stout (4.3%): While San Diego doesn’t celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with the same fervor as (say) Boston, there is always a noticeable uptick in interest around this time of year for the beers of Ireland. Their year-round Irish Stout is for the Guinness drinker in your life ‒ roasty, with baker’s chocolate characteristics and a slight herbal tinge from Fuggles hopping. With the signature low ABV (alcohol-by-volume) typical to the style moreover, this is a stout that can be enjoyed in rounds. Cheers!
