pFriem Fresh Hop Hazy IPA | Fresh-hop Hazy IPA (6.8%): If you ask me, pFriem Family Brewers may have missed a trick by not naming this beer “pFresh Hop Hazy IPA”, but I am merely a beer retailer and weekly columnist! The harvest season is well and truly upon us. Wet-hopping is known synonymously as fresh-hopping by our Pacific Northwest neighbors, and since they generously grow most of the hops in this country, we will gracefully defer. More of an unfiltered IPA than an opaque hazy one, this bright offering is a gift from Hood River, Oregon. A rogue’s gallery of varietals – Citra, Mosaic and Eclipse from Yakima Valley, plus fresh iterations of Amarillo and Centennial – makes for a tropical medley and oh so texturally appealing IPA.

OEC Oktoberfest | Festbier(5.9%): For decades, B. United International has imported an esoteric blend of beers and other beverages from Europe and Japan, funneling them through their Connecticut headquarters. In recent years, they have embraced innovative methods of delivering fresh imported beer by shipping tankers of the stuff over the oceans to be canned off at that selfsame facility. The cans of Aecht Schlenkerla and Hitachino Nest (to name but two of the best) that you see on our shelves emanate from that process. Hosting that canning line is Ordinem Ecentrici Coctores (OEC), a dog-Latin translation of “Order of the Eccentric Boilers”, a brewery with a surfeit of talent. Their Oktoberfest is quietly spectacular, a tour de force for the autumnal lager style.

Pizza Port Bacon & Eggs | Imperial Coffee Porter (8%): With the possible exception of AleSmith Brewing’s iconic Speedway Stout, no San Diego coffee beer inspires such devotion as Pizza Port Brewing’s Bacon & Eggs. A sumptuous blend of roasted grains and smooth, earthy coffee, this beer only comes around in the final months of the calendar year. We would carry it on a year-round basis if it were possible, but as that doesn’t seem to be in the cards – stock up now! [NOTE: Despite the name, this beer is suitable for vegans.]
