Gene Fielden | Bottlecraft North Park Manager

ISM / Ghost Town Death Dealer | West Coast IPA (6.66%): ISM Brewing is a new operation in downtown Long Beach, housed in the original Beachwood Brewing location. Owner Ian MacCall has a real pedigree, having brewed on that system as part of the Beachwood team before serving for five years as the head brewer at Riip Beer Co. in neighboring Huntington Beach. So please believe me when I say that the man knows West Coast IPAs! Death Dealer is a stunner of a collab with Oakland’s Ghost Town Brewing, drenched in Mosaic with supporting roles for Columbus, Nelson and Superdelic. A keg of this selfsame beer was just tapped at Bottlecraft North Park at the time of this writing – drop in for a taste and some cans to go!

Urban Roots Edel-Pils | German Pilsner (4.8%): “Edel” translates simply as “noble”, both in the sense of “dignified” as well as the Noble family of hops stemming from Germany and Bohemia. This Sacramento Pilsner paying fealty to Old World lagers is indeed elegant! Clean Pilsner malt, snappy herbal hopping and a hint of sulfur on the back end make for an altogether cheerful lager. This beer took a little while to catch on last year at this time, but the 2024 edition has been off like a rocket – we are up to our fifth case on order at press time. Prost!

Urban Chestnut Oachkatzlschwoaf | Festbier (5.4%): Having lived and worked in Germany repeatedly over the years – not to mention being the proud uncle of a six-year-old binational nephew – I speak reasonably good High German. Yet this mouthful of a beer-title in the Bavarian dialect caused a great deal of brow-furrowing. The equivalent Hochdeutsch word would be Eichhörnchenschweif, displaying both vowel shift and vocabulary divergence. The German language loves compound nouns, so let’s break it down:

Eich = Oach = Oak
Hörnchen = Katzl (literally “little cat”) = Squirrel
Schweif = Schwoaf = Tail

So this festbier from St. Louis is called “Squirrel Tail”! The translation may be teased out but the meaning is still mystifying. The beer itself is a fall seasonal lager brimming with toasty notes and a longing for shaded picnic-table liters with friends.
