El Segundo Hammerland | West Coast IPA (8.6%): I don’t make it out to the beach very often, but the late-summer heat sent me to OB over this past weekend. I sat on the sand and watched the surfers and boogie-boarders paddle out and come crashing back in. Wading out into the (surprisingly warm) ocean meant encountering forceful waves ‒ everyone jumped simultaneously to avoid being struck in the face with primordial salt water, like synchronized divers. Named after a break in the eponymous town of El Segundo, Hammerland is a similarly powerful double IPA loaded with Simcoe and Mosaic hops. This beer comes and goes like the tides, so pick a can up now!

Weihenstephaner Festbier | Festbier (5.8%): Easily the most anticipated seasonal release from the self-described “oldest brewery in the world” (claiming nearly a thousand years of brewing tradition), Festbier is brewed in the Wies’n style. How does this differ from the hitherto predominant Märzen? Glad you asked! Both contain Pilsner and Munich malts, but whereas Märzens have a higher proportion of Munich (imparting that lovely toasty bready nuttiness), for Wies’ns it is the other way around. This makes for an ideal pale strong lager for the late summer into early autumn. Prost!

Cellador Now, More Than Ever | Barrel-aged Sour Ale (6.4%): Masumoto Family Farm, located outside of Fresno, is a byword for absolutely flawless peaches and nectarines. Longtime fans of sour beer in Southern California will instantly recognize their mastery of stone fruit from Cuvée de Masumoto, a tribute by Mark Jilg of Craftsman Brewing. Cellador Ales has sourced Masumoto fruit for many previous wine barrel-aged sour beers, but this one is a new recipe! Dosed with flavorcrest peaches and almond, Now, More Than Ever is a beer whose name speaks for itself.
