Great Notion Juice Jr | Hazy IPA (6%): Portland’s Great Notion Brewing, which is famous for its over-fruited sour beers and instantly recognizable aesthetic (characterized as “cartoony neo-Expressionism” in this column in the past), has sent a drop of Juice Jr our way! Among the brewery’s hoppy lineup, this is easily the most-requested beer since distribution of Great Notion’s wares began. Placing Mosaic hops at the forefront, this low-ABV (alcohol-by-volume) hazy IPA is a treat for seniors, juniors and everyone in between.
Urban Roots Edel-Pils | German-style Pilsner (4.8%): Edel translates simply as “noble”, both in the sense of “dignified” as well as the Noble family of hops stemming from Germany and Bohemia. This Sacramento Pilsner paying fealty to Old World lagers is indeed elegant! Clean Pilsner malt, snappy herbal hopping and a hint of sulfur on the back end make for an altogether cheerful lager. Prost!
Cascade La Rita Loca | Barrel-aged Sour Ale (7.1%): The inimitable Cascade Brewing out of Oregon has set the standard for barrel-aged sour beers in the Pacific Northwest. Recent years have seen not only new recipes but also a more snackable 250-mililiter can size in their (already stacked) portfolio. La Rita Loca falls into both categories, explicitly inspired by margaritas. A base blend of tart blonde and wheat ales is aged up in tequila barrels with lime zest, sea salt and a touch of coriander. ¡Salud!
