Pure Project United | Hazy IPA (6.9%): The color combination of red, white and blue clearly has struck a chord among designers of national signifiers, for it appears on the flags of (among others) Chile, Czechia, France, Iceland, the Netherlands, Thailand and of course the United States. Bold vertical swathes thereof adorn this annual release from Pure Project, featuring Citra and Mosaic hops and an earnest appeal to unity.
Prairie ‘Merica Y’all | Hazy IPA (6%): The Oklahomans are at it again! Our favorite oddballs from Krebs have come up with an IPA whose label is festooned with as much irreverent Americana as can be crammed onto one 12-ounce can. This is one of those beers whose title demands to be read out loud, as phonetically as possible. Amusingly, the hops utilized are Nelson Sauvin, famously hailing from the south island of New Zealand ‒ all the more delightfully incongruous. Enjoy outdoors, ideally in bare feet or flip-flops on the grass.
Enegren Liberty Pils | German-style Pilsner (4.8%): Readers of this column will know that I am an unapologetic fan of Enegren’s single-hop pilsner series – and few varietals are as storied and nowadays obscure as Liberty. Exploding onto the scene in 1976 (!) with its inclusion in the eponymous Liberty Ale by Anchor upon the occasion of the bicentennial of this country, the newfangled hop widened eyes with what was contemporaneously perceived as bracing bitterness. Maintaining the 4th of July leitmotif, Enegren’s can-art is rendered in that familiar tricolore palette, with fireworks to boot. Cheers to a Thursday holiday!
