The theme this week is 13th anniversary beers. What a year 2011 was in retrospect!

Beachwood Hyperspeed | West Coast IPA (7.1%): A baker’s dozen years of incredible hoppy beers from Beachwood! True to form, they have concocted a West Coast IPA to mark the occasion. Hyperspeed hits us with high-velocity Mosaic (in three different forms), Strata and the increasingly popular HBC-586. The familiar blueberry tones of Mosaic are joined by resinous oils of all stripes. Cheers to Beachwood for thirteen years of unparalleled excellence in brewing!

Seek Cou Cou | Alsatian-style Pilsner (4.3%): Back in April at the San Diego Beer News Awards, I had the distinct honor to bestow the medal for Best Pilsner upon Dave Ohmer of Seek Beer Co. for his delicious Northern German Pilsner, Fortune. It soon became self-evident that we ought to ask whether he and his team would be willing to brew our anniversary beer for the occasion ‒ and couldn’t be more delighted with the outcome. Cou Cou (informal French for “Hello!”, typically among close friends or family) is a pilsner in the style of the beers of the Alsace. These light-bodied straw-colored lagers often have a floral bouquet from the Strißelspalt hops grown in the region alongside the justifiably celebrated white wines. Seek sourced some of these selfsame hops as well as pilsner malt from France, making it an unusually terroir-driven beer ‒ and just in time for the opening Paris Olympics on the 26th of this month. À votre santé!

[Begging your forgiveness for this repeat pick ‒ it fits all too perfectly with the theme!]

Enegren 13th Anniversary | Polotmavé (4.8%): Let’s break down the etymology of the style of this Czech-style amber lager, shall we? The word “tmavé” translates as “dark” ‒ indeed, many beers in Bohemia and Moravia are simply dubbed as such ‒ while “polo” simply means “half”. It thus follows that a lager of this hue and character would be “half-dark”! Caramel sweetbread entices on the nose, with a delightfully clean dry lager finish. Na zdraví!
