Madewest / Pure Project Short-Lived | Hazy IPA (7%): Madewest Brewing out of Ventura entertains a recurring one-off series of IPAs under the moniker “Short-Lived”, always in conjunction with a collaborative brewery. The recipes and labels may change, but the result is always worth a pint. The latest iteration is with our friends at local haze masters Pure Project, hopped with Citra and HBC 638. The latter is a newfangled experimental varietal that has drawn comparisons with Centennial, albeit with a brighter tropical fruit tone as well. The can-art displays a surreal chimera of a shark and a sheep – or is it a shark wearing sheep’s clothing?

Enegren High Street | Vienna-style Lager (5.4%): Vienna Lagers are closely related to Märzens, but whereas the Bavarians lean more on nutty Munich malt, the Austrians prefer a more caramel-forward Vienna malt. Both are ruddy red-brown beers with low ABV capped off by gentle lager finishes. While the Märzen has become well-known among beer aficionados, the Vienna Lager has languished in relative obscurity – for most domestic consumers, the first (or only) example they may have tasted is Sam Adams Boston Lager (possibly soon to be under the ownership of Suntory? Stay tuned!). For one more true to style, take an amble down the High Street with our good friends at Enegren.

Alvarado Street Paloma Pizzazz | Imperial Kettle Sour Ale (8%): I have nothing against margaritas, but am more apt to mix up a paloma at home. Particularly in the summertime, the combination of agave, fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice and lime is just the ticket. My personal recipe also adds a glug of Campari and a pinch of salt, which lowers the perceived bitterness of the citrus. The folks at Alvarado Street are clearly also devotees of the paloma, for they have attempted to backwards-engineer one in beer form! Dangerously drinkable at 8%, enjoy this one outside, in the sunshine.
