Gene Fielden | Bottlecraft North Park Manager
All three of this week’s picks are currently on draft at Bottlecraft North Park. Stop by and ask for a sample! Bottles and cans available for onsite enjoyment and or to go as well.
ISM / Original Pattern Repetitive Compulsion | West Coast IPA (6.7%): Alongside all of the other wonderful breweries in Oakland, Original Pattern Brewing has woven itself snugly into the tapestry of craft beer there. Located in the grid just off Jack London Square, this small operation presents a mosaic of choices for the discerning beer-drinker. No distribution to Southern California appears to yet be on the horizon, so in the interim enjoy this collaboration with ISM Brewing out of Long Beach! With a heavy Antipodean hop character (Eclipse from Oz as well as Nelson and Riwaka from New Zealand) alongside Citra and Simcoe, this is a multifaceted IPA! Notes of zingy gooseberries, peach fruit leather and resinous pine abound.
Schilling Jakobus | German Pilsner (5%): Outside of anniversary festivals at North Park Beer Co., Schilling Beer Co.’s beers have hitherto never been available around here! Located in the New Hampshire hamlet of Littleton, abutting the Connecticut River that forms the natural border with Vermont, this brewery makes absolutely stellar lagers of all stripes. Jakobus is a bright and cheerful pilsner in the German style, with a flaxen hue, and a gently herbal hopping of Hallertau Mittelfrüh and Saphir. I can say without reservation that this is the best new lager to hit our shelves of late. Prost!
Firestone Walker Parabola 2024 | Barrel-aged Imperial Stout (13.8%): As the bourbon market bifurcates ever further, some age-statement editions from certain producers have become all but out of reach for the casual connoisseur. Sometimes the closest encounter may be in the second use of the oak casks in which the liquid is aged, into which a burly malt-driven beer may rest for a spell. So it is with one of the more famous barrel-aged stouts of California: Parabola by Firestone Walker Brewing. This year’s version ‒ the seventeenth! ‒ is a blend of 12-year Elijah Craig and 11-year Henry McKenna in provenance.Click here to explore the quality beers at Bottlecraft’s four San Diego locations.
