Gene's Picks 4/25/24

Gene Fielden | Bottlecraft North Park Manager

The theme this week is sea creatures, as depicted on all three cans!

Humble Sea / Brujos Mega Megalodon | Hazy Double IPA (8.8%): In honor of their 7th anniversary, the kooks at Humble Sea cooked up a bevy of celebratory collaborative beers. In conjunction with Brujos out of Oregon, this particular hazy Double IPA exalts the megalodon, a gigantic extinct species of shark. Seemingly willing to eat anything and everything, this sea monster disappeared from our planet a couple couple million years ago, leaving behind a fossil record consisting primarily of terrifyingly large teeth. Spare a thought for the intelligent and empathic whales who had to face one of these creatures!

Living Haus Quint | West Coast Pilsner (5.5%): Speaking of sharks… you’re going to need a bigger boat. Searing a fear of beaches into a generation of moviegoers, Jaws is widely understood as the first blockbuster. Memorably played by Robert Shaw (who would pass away just three years after the role catapulted him into film stardom), Quint is the grizzled sea dog who agrees to take on the task of hunting down the silent titular character. This hoppy pilsner from Living Haus (in the same space previously occupied by Modern Times Portland and The Commons) is given a healthy dose of Mosaic, Spalter, Strata and Waimea for a cornucopia of fruits on the aroma and a snappy finish. I’m talkin’ about sharkin’!

Sierra Nevada Barrel-aged Narwhal | Bourbon Barrel-aged Imperial Stout (11.9%): Initial human sightings of the narwhal may well have been dismissed as myths or tall tales – who would believe that the unicorn is real but happens to live in the waters around the Arctic Circle? Not only is the narwhal real (and not its own branch of cryptozoology), it is an elegant whale with an elongated tusk, capable of very deep dives into frigid waters. Inspired by such a mysterious creatures of the depths, Sierra Nevada has an obsidian imperial stout lurking in bourbon barrels for you.
