Trillium Citra Cutting Tiles | Hazy Double IPA (8.5%): This column marks the very first time that Trillium has appeared among the picks. Sporadic distribution drops over the past twenty months have tantalized San Diegans looking to experience one of the codifiers of the hazy IPA, as well as transplanted New Englanders in the throes of nostalgia. Cutting Tiles is a line of Double IPAs exploring a single hops varietal, with a dose of raw wildflower honey for body and aroma. This edition spotlights Citra, whose key lime characteristics meld beautifully with the floral notes provided by the honey. This beer was an off-list item from the distributor and surely will not linger long!

Enegren Dunkel | Munich-style Dunkel (5.5%): A good Dunkles Lager is hard to find. Literally translating to “dark lager”, this southern German style is the brown bread of beers, offering toasty aromas atop a lighter body. These sorts of bottom-fermented beers predominated throughout the independent kingdom of Bavaria before the great pilsner wave roared through in the middle of the 19th century. As usual, Enegren absolutely nails it – nutty Munich malts predominate, while the lagering process makes for a dry and clean finish. With such a low ABV, this is a beer to be enjoyed in multiples. Prost!

Off Color Dino S’Mores | Pastry Stout (9.5%): Chicago is home to a panoply of incredible breweries, a testament to the groundswell of support by local drinkers. While Half Acre, Revolution and Dovetail (to name but three) would be high points on the agenda of most craft beer-oriented visitors, I have an enduring soft spot for Off Color. This idiosyncratic operation has a delightful camping-inspired stout for wintertime in Dino S’Mores. With cocoa nibs, graham flour, marshmallow, molasses and vanilla in the mix, tempered by a sturdy basis of eight malts, this is a dessert beer to curl up with.
