Gene Fielden | Bottlecraft North Park Manager
Beachwood Jukebox Jammer | West Coast IPA (7.1%): All right, I am going to go ahead and say it: I do not much care for Talus hops. This varietal appeared on the scene a few years ago and promptly began nudging its way onto hop-bills, often in combination with Mosaic. Descended from (the similarly polarizing) Sabro, Talus comes off to me as redolent of rosemary, a flavor I welcome alongside marcona almonds but not necessarily in an IPA. Please note: everyone’s physiology and taste-buds are different, so this is not meant to be prescriptive but rather observational. Hence it is a pleasant surprise whenever a hop-forward beer with Talus on the docket turns out to be delicious, as with this new one from Beachwood Brewing. Partnered up with Mosaic once again but also with classic, dank Columbus, Talus has won me over in the safe hands of the Long Beach hop wizards. Cheers!
Human People Lovers | Helles Lager (4.5%): A Valentine’s Day beer if ever there was one! Our friends at Human People Beer in Seattle have crafted a soft and welcoming pale lager for you and your loved ones. Cerulean skies with gauzy fluffy clouds make up the abstract art on the can. This is a beer for dreamers and romantics, or just those who delight in a well-crafted bottom-fermented offering.
Brooklyn Black Ops | Bourbon Barrel-aged Imperial Stout (12.4%): Once upon a time, this beer came only in 750-milliliter corked-and-caged bottles, with an asking price of $25 or thereabouts. My how the times have changed! Now in 16-ounce cans for $5.75 apiece, this wintertime seasonal is just about the best deal in barrel-aged stouts around. Slumbering for a spell in Four Roses cooperage, Black Ops is a welcome return to form for Brooklyn Brewery and easily their most exciting new limited release in our market of late.
