Cellarmaker Dank of the West | West Coast IPA (6.5%): Reflecting an ongoing love for punning beer titles ‒ see also “Investment Danking”, a late-October release ‒ Cellarmaker Brewing has returned with the brilliantly named Dank of the West. An unabashedly bitter and resinous IPA, yet light on its feet at 6.5% ABV (alcohol-by-volume), this is a clarion-call for the California tradition of hoppy beers. The hops lineup is a layered blend of two old-school (Centennial and Simcoe) and two new-wave (Idaho 7 and Strata), setting up a dichotomy of olfactory and bittering influences. Cheers to Cellarmaker for continuing to hold the torch aloft for the West Coast IPA!
Living Haus Castorini | Italian-style Pilsner (5.2%): The Italian Pilsner is seemingly unstoppable! A long distance from its origins near the shores of Lake Como in northern Lombardy, this style has caught the imaginations of craft breweries everywhere. It makes a great deal of sense in our current Zeitgeist ‒ the return to lagers, the emphasis on lower-ABV beers (as none of us are getting any younger!), and yet still the demand for aromatic hops persists. With a bedrock of noble Tettnang and generous dosing of Hüll-bred Saphir and Spalter Select, Castorini is the latest new lager from our friends at Living Haus in Portland. Cin-cin!
Enegren Christmas Bock | Winter Bock (7.2%): There’s no denying San Diego is a hops town, but as the morning fog creeps in and the sweatshirts go on, a malt-forward lager is exactly what is called for. This ruddy maroon-hued bockbier provides delightful caramel aromas and bready satiation, tied off by spicy Hallertau and Herkules hops from Germany. The Tannenbaum festooning the label proudly proclaims the season. This beer will be featured at our Holiday Beer & Cheese event at Bottlecraft North Park on Tuesday, December 10 in conjunction with our partners at Venissimo ‒ follow the embedded link for tickets. Frohe Weihnachten!
