In the spirit of San Diego Beer Week, all of this week’s picks are hoppy collaborations between local craft breweries.

Fall Brewing (et al) Capital of Craft 2024 | West Coast IPA (6.6%): Happy San Diego Beer Week to all! A longstanding tradition of the San Diego Brewers Guild, the annual Capital of Craft is invariably a mega-collab between one host brewery and a bevy of other independent operators in the county. The 2024 iteration is a West Coast IPA cooked up on Fall Brewing’s system, joined by Black Plague Brewing, Blind Lady Ale House (BLAH) Brewing, Hodad’s Brewing, Hopnonymous Brewing and Ketch Brewing. At the time of this writing, cans of this commemorative IPA are on our shelves and a keg is pouring freely at Bottlecraft North Park, so drop by and ask for a taste!

Burgeon / North Park Beer / Pure Project Delta Sequence | West Coast IPA (6.8%): This three-way collaboration between some of the most respected brewers of hoppy beers in San Diego is a can’t-lose proposition. Essentially a mashup of each respective brewery’s flagship West Coast IPA ‒ Treevana for Burgeon, Hop-Fu! for North Park Beer Co. and Pure West for Pure Project Brewing ‒ this recipe stuffs all the hops from all three recipes into a single can, making seven distinct varietals in total. Mosaic is furthermore represented in Cryo form, and Citra in both Cryo and Incognito incarnations. Eagle-eyed observers will note that the the ABV (alcohol-by-volume) of Delta Sequence lands at 6.8%, which happens to be the average of the three inspiration beers.

GOAL. / Mcilhenney Alpine to the Boulevard | West Coast IPA (6.7%): “Alpine” is not merely a mountain range or a style of cheese, but also a town in East County with an outsized influence on local craft-beer history. The eponymous brewery half an hour up the hill from San Diego made otherworldly hoppy beers, and arguably put the Nelson varietal on the map. Its successor project, McIlhenny Brewing, has kept to this lofty standard since opening in 2021, family-owned and fiercely independent. “The Boulevard” can only refer in this case to El Cajon Boulevard, so consequential that its western terminus boasts an archway sign ordinarily reserved for neighborhoods. GOAL. Brewing is headquartered upon said boulevard, alongside Seek Beer Co. and Barley & Sword Brewing. These geographical elements combine to form the name of this beer, replete with Citra and Nectaron hops. Cheers to collaborative efforts and our shared heritage of West Coast IPAs!
