Burgeon Fresh Hop Carlsbad Crush | Fresh Hop Pale Ale (5.8%): Hailing from ‒ you guessed it! ‒ Carlsbad, Burgeon Beer Co. has a wildly ambitious new release schedule. Yet their core beer I always return to is Carlsbad Crush, a beautiful expression of the Mosaic hops varietal. Imagine our delight when we discovered that cans of the fresh-hopped edition would be released into local distribution! All of the blueberry and overripe pineapple one might expect from the mighty Mosaic cones, plus an ineffable textural element. This is likely the last major fresh-hop release of the year, so enjoy it now before the rains return!
Lyons Peak Handgeplukte Kriek | Belgian-style Kriek (6.2%): Brewing a kriek ‒ spontaneously fermented ale aged in oak with whole cherries macerated in ‒ is one of the most difficult styles of beer to pull off. On top of that, the most prized subtype of cherries for traditional kriek is known as Schaerbeek, after the eponymous town northeast of Brussels. These are beloved for their inherent sourness yet are very finicky and difficult to grow even in Belgium, to say nothing of outside of the Low Countries! It is thus a tour de force that local brewer Chad Stevens successfully managed to raise an orchard in Jamul, and then made an incredible kriek utilizing the fruits of its harvest. The beer has been imbued with a Flemish title, meaning “hand-picked cherry”, and won a gold medal at the World Beer Cup for the debut batch earlier this year. Please join us at Bottlecraft Little Italy the evening of Tuesday, November 10 for a guided tasting with the man himself, featuring Batch One of this beer, Cantillon Kriek and vintage Drie Fonteinen Kriek. Tickets available here!
Radiant Best in Sho | Japanese Lager (4.9%): The humble rice lager has taken on unparalleled dimensions in recent years. Once the preserve of sushi restaurants or ramen joints, nowadays craft brewers far and wide will try their hand at these crisp, dry and cheerfully effervescent beers. The latest delicious iteration on our shelves comes to us from Radiant Beer Co. out of Anaheim, started up by alumni from The Bruery. Drop by Bottlecraft North Park for a taste off our draft-line before considering whether to take a four-pack home. Kanpai!
