Pure Project / Burgeon Home for the Holihaze | Hazy Double IPA (8.8%): An annual collaborative release between host brewery Pure Project Brewing and guest-star Burgeon Beer Co., Home For The Holihaze is a tribute to those who brave the freeways and airports at this time of year so as to spend time with loved ones. The 2024 iteration boasts New Zealand varietals Nectaron and Nelson, alongside Oregon-grown Mosaic Cryo. This is a veritable fruit-basket of a beer, with a density of texture to keep the drinker warm and satiated.

Dupont Avec Les Bon Vœux | Holiday Saison (9.5%): Wallonia’s Brasserie Dupont makes the gold standard for classic farmhouse ales with their namesake flagship saison. Their proprietary peppery yeast-strain and copper fermentation vessels create something ineffable, a rustic beer for the onset of modernity. Once a year, however, they release their “With Best Wishes” (word-for-word, “with the good wishes”, but this is an idiomatic translation), a beer ideal for gift-giving. Sort of a combination of a saison and a tripel, this holiday beer maintains the trappings of their base recipe but adds candi sugar to crank the ABV (alcohol-by-volume) up another couple of notches. As with Trappist ales, this non-malt-derived sugar source is like steroids for their voracious yeasts, who respond by producing much higher levels of alcohol and carbonation. Enjoy with good friends!

Russian River Shadow of a Doubt | Imperial Porter (9.6%): Long before his postwar run of suspense masterpieces, Alfred Hitchcock was making smaller-scale (but no less unnerving) films. His 1943 feature Shadow of a Doubt was largely shot on location in Santa Rosa, and is a fascinating glimpse into the appearance of that town for those of us watching eight decades later. Nowadays the most famous local residents for craft-beer connoisseurs are the Cilurzo family of Russian River Brewing, who have created an eponymous beer in honor of the black-and-white flick. A commanding, roasty and slightly smoky imperial porter, it features a foreboding locomotive pulling into the town’s train station on its label and is best consumed while watching the film on a holiday weekend.
