The theme this week is pairs of characters!
Beachwood / Green Cheek Adventures of Lucky & Cheeky | West Coast IPA (7%): When two of the absolute best hoppy breweries in our neck of the woods team up, it is a safe bet to just go for the full four-pack. Taking as inspiration their respective mascots ‒ Lucky the hop cone and Cheeky the Parakeet ‒ this surprisingly light-bodied West Coast IPA is stuffed full of Mosaic, Nectaron and hop terpenes for aroma. Grab a pal and go on an adventure with this one!
Moonlight / Bottlecraft Fratelli | Italian-style Pilsner (5.2%): Over the course of my time at Bottlecraft, I have been involved in the creation of a number of collaborative beers with independent craft breweries both near and far. Those of us on the retail and service side of the beer-ecosystem would have nothing to offer without the extraordinarily talented people who actually brew the beer that makes our lives that much better. This one is intensely personal, however, as it combines my tenth work anniversary (and that of my Bottlecraft Little Italy counterpart Ian Cutler) with Moonlight Brewing, a Santa Rosa operation close to my heart. In conjunction with head brewer Zac Greenwood, we formulated the recipe ‒ Eraclea and Weyermann Barke malts, a hop-blend of Spalt/Tettnang/Saphir, soft deionized water ‒ before flying up in early October for the brew-day. Fratelli simply translates as “brothers” ‒ those who are familiar with The Goonies will recall that the antagonists are the “Fratelli brothers”, a joke that I did not understand until many years later ‒ reflecting the fact that Ian and I were hired on the very same day at Bottlecraft a decade ago!
Cellarmaker Coffee & Cigarettes | Smoked Coffee Porter (7.7%): This is easily my favorite non-hoppy beer from Cellarmaker Brewing ‒ a delicate blend of earthy coffee, gently roasted malts and a whisper of smoke. Every single morning, I drink coffee out of a mug featuring both anthropomorphic avatars from the label: a twitchy wired coffee cup and subdued ashtray. Drink this while watching the series of short black-and-white films by Jim Jarmusch under the selfsame name.
