El Segundo Inspiration | Harvest IPA (7.2%): Like any agricultural product, there is something ineffable about freshly picked hops. The kilning and pelletizing process preserves the building blocks of this wonderful plant, but many of the essential oils are lost. Since we want to brew beer year-round, this is a necessary sacrifice, apart from a window of time each autumn when the use of green cones straight off the bine is possible. Inspiration is a distilled expression of the Yakima Valley, the Mecca for hops in the country. This year, El Segundo Brewing worked directly with the Loza family for an all-Citra celebration. Cheers to another successful harvest!

Highland Park Timbo Pils | Hoppy Pilsner (5.8%): The Timbo that started it all. A beer so beloved that it now has an entire week devoted to it. The Pilsner whose recipe is brewed (with permission!) by Alvarado Street Brewery, Cellarmaker Brewing and Green Cheek Beer Co. upon occasion, constituting a veritable multiverse. There are many Timbos in this world, but this one is the ur-Timbo. Appealing to those who love hops and those who love lagers, Timbo will pull at your heartstrings like the disembodied blue hands on the label plucking notes from the guitar neck. Citra and Mosaic over a clean lager base, and such a reasonably low ABV (alcohol by-volume), too…who could ask for anything more?

Russian River Shadow of a Doubt | Imperial Porter (9.6%): Long before his postwar run of suspense masterpieces, Alfred Hitchcock was making smaller-scale (but no less unnerving) films. His 1943 feature, Shadow of a Doubt, was largely shot on-location in Santa Rosa, California, and is a fascinating glimpse into the appearance of that town for those of us watching eight decades later. Nowadays its most famous residents for craft-beer connoisseurs are the Cilurzo family of Russian River Brewing fame, who have created an eponymous beer in honor of the black-and-white flick. A commanding, roasty and slightly smoky imperial porter with a foreboding locomotive pulling into the town’s train station on its label, it is best consumed while watching the film on a damp and dreary evening.
