This week’s column focuses on a single brewery, spotlighting the debut of Human People Beer in San Diego!

Human People / Humble Sea Of the Moment | Fresh Hop Pilsner (5.5%): Who are Human People? Two-thirds are brewing veterans of San Diego – Andrew Schwartz and Tim Kamolz, both formerly of Modern Times Beer – and Mallorie King, who for many years had the incredible job of hops broker. The hops you have enjoyed at many of your favorite breweries all across the West Coast? They were supplied by her! In conjunction with Santa Cruz stalwarts Humble Sea, this Pilsner was brewed with heaps of Citra from CLS Farms in the Yakima Valley harvested on the very same day. An incredible suffusion of this prized varietal comes to the fore on the aroma, with an efflorescence of mango and lime flavor and a clean lager finish. This is one of the most intense fresh-hopped beers I have tasted in 2024 and I cannot recommend it enough.

Human People High Hopes | Hazy IPA (7%): One of two IPAs debuting on this initial drop in San Diego, Human People has High Hopes. This is a sterling example of how “layering” can work in hops additions, as each round of varietals impart different outcomes. No mere juice box of a beer, there is some welcome perceived bitterness in the mix. For those keeping track at home, the dramatis personae is Anchovy, Citra, Galaxy, Mosaic and Strata, with Sub-Zero Hop Kief from Freestyle Farms in New Zealand to boot.

Human People / Horus Aged Ales Indigo (The Cooper’s Hawk) | Coffee Stout (8%): Now this is a coffee stout for coffee lovers! Collaborating with Kyle Harrop of Oceanside’s very own Horus Aged Ales, Human People has roasted up a stout for us all. The Pacific Northwest is a hotbed of coffee production, not least Outer Dark from Tacoma – Indigo was brewed with a bespoke blend of beans created just for the occasion. A real caramel macchiato of a beer, ideal after a midafternoon nap. Cheers to Human People and welcome (back) to San Diego!
