A very special Halloween edition of the Picks of the Week!

Great Notion Beetlejuice Jr. | Hazy IPA (6%): It’s showtime! Just in time for Halloween, Great Notion Brewing has dropped a trifecta of outré offerings. Taking a cue from the brewery’s immensely popular Juice Jr., meet none other than Beetlejuice Jr., the self-described “bio-exorcist” and all-around agent of chaos in the striped outfit. With a dry-hop of nothing but Mosaic, let’s turn on the juice and see what shakes loose. I cannot promise that if you say the name of this beer three times, it will appear in front of you ‒ but give it a whirl just to be sure?

Prairie Pumpkin Kerfuffle | Imperial Sour Ale (8.2%): Oklahoma’s Prairie Artisan Ales can always be relied upon for mondo bizarro sour beers, and this autumnal special release is no exception. With gobs of the flavors that make up “pumpkin spice” ‒ think allspice, nutmeg, cinnamon and so forth ‒ and marshmallows to make it extra Halloweeny, this is quite a kerfuffle all right. The can-art is directly inspired by René Magritte, one of the finest surrealists of all, from the beer-loving country of Belgium.

Jester King Black Metal | Imperial Stout (12%): Get out your corpse-paint and fire up the blast beats for this one! Black Metal is a merciless, punishing imperial stout from the inimitable Jester King Brewery of the Texas Hill Country outside of Austin. Stare into the abyss and see for yourself that no light may pass through this ebon opaque beer. To cite Nigel Tufnel of Spinal Tap, “It’s like, how much more black could this be? And the answer is none. None more black.”
