Fremont Field to Ferment | Wet-hopped Pale Ale (6%): Even within the rarefied category of wet-hopped beers, Fremont Brewing stands out. Their deservedly laudatory Field to Ferment series serves to kick-start the autumn every year, with a judicious 6% (alcohol-by-volume, AKA: ABV) pale ale base upon which the fresh green hop-cones are allowed to express themselves. The only edition of this perennial favorite this year is a single hop expression of Strata. Drink now. It won’t get any fresher!

Lowercase Northern German-style Pilsner | Northern German Pilsner (4.9%): Lowercase Brewing out of Seattle (right by SeaTac airport, a fine final place to stop before your flight home) brews lagers and lagers only. A brewery after my own heart! Somewhat maddeningly, with the exception of their core Italian Pilsner, they never repeat a beer in distribution. If you find a beer of theirs to your tastes, enjoy it in the moment. This aptly named Northern German-style Pilsner embraces the feinherb snappy bitterness so favored by drinkers on the North and Baltic Seas. Prost!

Alvarado Street Double Howzit Punch | Fruited Kettle Sour Ale (8%): Formerly entitled “Double Haole Punch” – a reference to the sugary concoction Hawai’ian Punch but also a Polynesian term for non-islanders – this kettle-sour is both inordinately refreshing and hides the ABV scarily well. The base edition was the first beer in my recollection to make good use of the trio of fruits known popularly as POG, which stands for passionfruit, orange and guava. “Like Capri Sun for adults” is how we would characterize it, if all the high fructose corn syrup were removed and replaced with lovely lactobacillus.
