What We're Drinking 2026

Kern River 20th Anniversary with Firestone Walker | West Coast IPA (7%): For craft beer drinkers of a certain generation in Central and Southern California, Kern River Brewing is a touchstone. Creator of immortal IPAs such as Just Outstanding ‒ so familiar as to be simply shortened to “Jay Oh” when spoken aloud ‒ and Citra, the little brewery up the mountain road has demonstrated quality and longevity all at once. Now celebrating 20 years in operation, Kern River has embarked upon a victory lap of sorts, releasing multiple collaborative IPAs marking the milestone with some of the finest breweries in California. This iteration is in conjunction with Firestone Walker Brewing from Paso Robles, replete with Cascade, Krush, Mosaic and Nectaron ‒ a fitting blend of old and new hops. Cheers to Kern River for 20 years of just outstanding beer!

Wayfinder / Holy Mountain Satanic Panic | Kellerbier (5.3%): Just in time for Halloween comes an unholy trinity of releases from Wayfinder Beer! Readers are also encouraged to check out the other two ‒ Golden Tiger and Terrifica ‒ but the one profiled in these virtual pages is Satanic Panic. Brewed in collaboration with the incredible Holy Mountain Brewing out of Seattle, this is a rustic unfiltered lager hopped with hops of Alsatian origin ‒ Aramis and Strißelspalt. The sensory outcome is incredible ‒ floral peppercorn aromas over a cracker-malt basis, with gentle bitterness on the finish. Drink one on the 31st and don’t panic!

Finback Churro Drip | Pastry Stout (11%): Finback Brewery only rarely surfaces around here, as mysterious as the whale that adorns its logo. Hailing from Queens ‒ the most sizable of all the five boroughs, larger than Manhattan and Brooklyn combined, and home to people from every corner of the earth ‒ Finback creates excellent beers of all styles. Churro Drip is an imperial stout that pays homage to the humble fried savory-sweet snack, suffused with cinnamon, coffee, peanut butter and vanilla beans. Strangely underpriced, this is a delight for those with a sweet tooth!
