El Segundo Inspiration | Harvest IPA (7.2%): Like any agricultural product, there is something ineffable about freshly picked hops. The kilning and pelletizing process may necessarily preserve the building blocks of this wonderful plant, but many of the essential oils are lost. Since we want to brew beer year-round, this is an unavoidable sacrifice ‒ apart from a window of time in the autumn when the use of green cones straight off the bine is possible. Inspiration is a distilled expression of the Yakima Valley, the Mecca of hops in this country. This year, El Segundo Brewing worked directly with the Loza family for an all-Citra celebration. Cheers to another successful harvest!

Moonlight Reality Czeck | Czech-style Pilsner (4.9%): This is not a new beer by any stretch, and was profiled in the virtual pages of this publication a year and a half ago upon the debut of Moonlight Brewing in Southern California a year-and-a-half ago. Nevertheless, it deserves a renewed spotlight in the wake of winning a gold medal at the Great American Beer Festival last weekend! Snappy and herbal like the Pilsners of the Czech lands, with a delicate spiciness from the Noble hops, this lager has grown in popularity and now approaches half the output of the brewery. I had the distinct honor of drinking a can fresh off the line with Ian Cutler (my counterpart at Bottlecraft Little Italy) alongside the entire Moonlight crew earlier this month, and it was every bit as delicious as it sounds. More on that visit in the near future…

Gold Dot Book Club Black Beer | Tmavé Pivo (5.3%): Landing somewhere between a Munich dunkel and a Černé Pivo, this opaque Czech-style dark lager straddles the line between “toast” and “roast”. Floor-malted and decocted, this beer pays homage to the classic techniques of Bohemia and Moravia. Black-bread and coffee tones are notable on the aroma, with a delicate sweetness accompanying the fine-grained bitterness of Sládek and Žatec (aka Saaz) hops. Enjoy while reading a good book or during the ensuing discussion. Na zdraví!
