Beachwood Pizza Corgi | West Coast IPA (7.1%): What is a pizza corgi, you ask? Your columnist is equally stumped. Real chin-scratcher, that one. The title of this beer reads like a Mad Libs “noun” “noun” prompt. Beachwood Brewing makes outstanding pizza at their Huntington Beach location, and corgis have all but universal appeal ‒ perhaps it is no more complicated than that? Anyway, this West Coast IPA is entirely hopped with New Zealand varietals ‒ our old friend Nelson and also Nectaron, a sister of the better-known Waimea. A pronounced grassiness comes through alongside sticky pineapple tones. Cheers to pizza…and corgis!
Highland Park Timbo Pils | Hoppy Pilsner (5.8%): The Timbo that started it all. A beer so beloved that it now has an entire week devoted to it. The Pilsner whose recipe is brewed (with permission!) by Alvarado Street Brewery, Cellarmaker Brewing and Green Cheek Beer Co. upon occasion, constituting a veritable multiverse. There are many Timbos in this world, but this one is the ur-Timbo. Appealing to those who love hops and those who love lagers, Timbo will pull at your heartstrings like the disembodied blue hands on the label plucking notes from the guitar neck. Citra and Mosaic hops over a clean lager base, and such a reasonably low ABV (alcohol-by-volume) too ‒ who could ask for anything more?
Cellador Akimbo | Stone Fruit Sour (6.3%): Cellador Ales continues to impress with their explorations of mixed-fermentation saisons and table beers aged up in wine barrels with various fruit treatments. With fresh peaches from the unparalleled Masumoto Family Farm outside of Fresno, Akimbo imparts lush fruit aromas alongside judicious tartness. The aromatic dose of Nelson Sauvin at the finish adds another veil of tropical abundance to a delightfully sour beer.
