Gene Fielden at Bottlecraft North Park

Gene Fielden | Bottlecraft North Park Manager

Human People Spanning Time | West Coast IPA (7.5%): On Friday the 17th, we had the honor of hosting Human People Beer and Living Haus Beer Co. ‒ Modern Times alumni one and all ‒ at Bottlecraft North Park. The former operation out of Seattle came to town for Burgeon Beer Co.’s anniversary fest up in inland Carlsbad over the weekend, so we took the opportunity to throw an event in their honor! Spanning Time is a love letter to the Yakima Valley, with Mosaic and Columbus in the mix alongside two terroir-specific lots of Cashmere and Vista from CLS Farms. Variegated aromas of blueberries, lemon zest and pineapples will tantalize your senses, while the straightforward malt bill makes for a clean finish.

Augustiner Lagerbier Hell | Helles Lager (5.3%): A returning champion! Few beers have given me more pleasure to profile in the virtual pages of this publication than this one. Augustiner Bräu has been brewing for nearly seven centuries (!) in Munich and is arguably the best of the “big six” breweries that have their own tents at Oktoberfest. Hitherto only their Edelstoff (a heftier pale lager) and Maximator (a sturdy doppelbock) have been exported to the United States. Whenever I am in Germany visiting family or friends, however, it is the Lagerbier Hell that animates me. An absolutely pitch-perfect helles, this beer has endless sparkle and brightness. I typically pack a pile of bottles in my return luggage and can scarcely believe this beer is on our shelves now. Prost!

Living Haus Pearl | Coffee Stout (6.5%): Based out of the erstwhile Modern Times Portland facility (and before that, the late and much-missed brewery, The Commons), Living Haus is now a fixture of that storied beer-destination city. In conjunction with Stigbergets Bryggeri from the western Swedish city of Gothenburg, this stout is liberally dosed with coffee from the Puff roastery located a scant mile and a half from Living Haus. Enjoy in the mid-afternoon, after a nap!
