Gene Fielden | Bottlecraft North Park Manager
Dry January may be half over, but this is my first column of the year! A selection of non-alcoholic beers to spotlight:
Best Day Kölsch | Non-alcoholic Kölsch (0%): Capturing the essence of a pale lager without alcohol is a tall order ‒ many have attempted and failed in years past. Yet Best Day Brewing out of Sausalito has done it, by gum. With both pilsner and Cologne malts on the grain-bill and Hallertau hops, the recipe is befitting of the original top-fermented lagers of Köln. Crisp and light with depth of flavor, lack of alcohol notwithstanding ‒ an achievement by any stretch.
Untitled Art N/A Mango Dragonfruit | Non-alcoholic Fruited Sour (0%): Even sour ales have joined the sober party! Wisconsin’s Untitled Art has a veritable galaxy of non-alcoholic (N/A) beers, but the Mango Dragonfruit has proven to be among the most popular. With a healthy dose of real fruits (mango, guava and pitaya) and a gentle tartness, this is for those who frequent the juice-bar. This creation was the gold medalist at the 2025 Great American Beer Festival in the category of Non-Alcoholic Beer!
Fremont N/A Dark | Non-alcoholic Stout (0%): Among all styles of beer, porters and stouts have proven to be the toughest nut to crack in the non-alcoholic category. The best one I have tasted hitherto is doubtless this roasty ale from Fremont Brewing out of Seattle. Free of astringency or residual sugars, this stout could easily be mistaken for the real thing! I personally enjoy adding a few drops of black walnut bitters (for a dessert-esque experience) or Xocolatl molé bitters (for wintry spicing), depending on my mood.
