Cellarmaker Pacific Dopeness | West Coast IPA (6.9%): New year, new beer, back to basics. Longstanding Bay Area stalwarts Cellarmaker (now headquartered in my hometown of Berkeley) have come back from the holidays with a clean and dry West Coast IPA with a combination of old-school and new-wave hops to reset the palate. Pacific Dopeness blends up Motueka, Simcoe, Strata and Talus for an herbaceous and tropical outcome. I am well known to have a particular fondness (weakness?) for Motueka and will taste any beer from a reputable brewery utilizing it.
Living Haus / Holy Mountain Margie Lee | West Coast Pilsner (5.6%): The hoppy lager wave shows no sign of receding. Relative newcomers, Living Haus (brewing on the system that once housed Modern Times Portland and, before that, The Commons) have a robust selection of lagers of all stripes. In conjunction with the stupendous Seattle brewery, Holy Mountain (named after Alejandro Jodorowky’s freak-out magnum opus La Montaña Sagrada), they have created a heavily Citra-hopped Pilsner. Margie Lee will surely appeal to hopheads and lager fanatics alike.
Perennial / Prairie Bombraxas | Imperial Spiced Coffee Stout (10.5%): Alongside Hunahpu’s by Cigar City and Mexican Cake by Westbrook, Abraxas by Perennial helped kickstart the so-called “Mexican chocolate stout” craze circa a dozen years ago. Alone among this trifecta, Abraxas sees distribution to our market, a sought-after annual release. Alongside the base edition and beloved Vanilla Abraxas, this year brings us a mash-up with Prairie Artisan Ales, whose core Bomb! series similarly boasts coffee, chiles and other spicing. Enjoy this with friends on a cold night.
