Gene Fielden | North Park Bottlecraft Manager

All three of the beers profiled in this week’s column will be available at Bottlecraft’s North Park, Little Italy and Oceanside locations as components of a flight this upcoming Saturday, July 8. This is part and parcel of our recurring Sour Saturday series we have been running all summer long. This month’s theme is American wild ales!

Jester King Petit Prince | Brett Table Beer (2.9%): Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s masterpiece The Little Prince is adored the world over as a children’s book, albeit one tinged with melancholia. Depicting allegorical themes of planetary destruction, lost love and the transitory nature of the human condition, with iconic watercolor illustrations to match, it is a book with great meaning to generations of grown-ups who have not forgotten the arbitrary confusion of childhood. With their usual sumptuous artwork, Jester King Brewery’s recurring Petit Prince pays explicit homage to the story; a dry, prickly lunchtime beer that’s both elegant and refined. Now in 16-ounce cans and, at the time of this writing, on draft at Bottlecraft North Park!

Cascade Tropical Grasslands | Barrel-aged Gose (4.7%): Despite the plethora of breweries that have populated the Pacific Northwest in recent years, Cascade Brewery still stands front and center for barrel-aged sour ales. Notable for their lack of kettle sours and extensive use of northwest Oregon’s local agricultural bounty (longtime drinkers will recall the cornucopia that proudly emblazoned their old labels), Cascade is still a must-visit for acid-head travelers to Portland. Tropical Grasslands takes the traditional salted funk of a Gose and adds orange and lemongrass for a citric tinge.

The Rare Barrel Nowhere To Go | White Peach Sour Ale (7.9%): Long ago, brewers and drinkers ascertained that acidity in beer can be tempered by the addition of fruits high in natural sugars. Stone fruit in all forms provide an ideal foil for sharpness or astringency, or otherwise understandable low pH. Nowhere To Go leans hard into this line of thinking, with almost two tuns of Summer Sweet peaches going into this 2021 vintage. Stay put and enjoy!
