Release: Hello World
Culver Beer Co. recreates an oatmeal stout conceived to celebrate a child's birth
As part of our second-annual Homebrew Summer program, various San Diego County breweries have teamed with amateur brewers to produce their homespun recipes on their commercial systems, then tap the resultant beers in their tasting rooms.
Today’s homebrewer-to-homebrewer contribution comes from Jacob Gottlieb and David Lord, who submitted their recipe for an oatmeal stout and had it selected by Carlsbad’s Culver Beer Co.. Dubbed Hello World, the beer was originally brewed to celebrate the birth of Gottlieb’s first child. Because of the sacred nature of that special event, the recipe for this one will be kept under wraps, but fear not, you can taste the beer when it taps at Culver later today.
Check back to San Diego Beer News throughout the summer for more recipes as well as release dates for other pro-am beers. It’s shaping up to be a great summer for homebrewers and beer fans alike, and we’re glad to have you be part of it!
Choosing this recipe from the list was a combination of a few variables coming together and the timing could not have been better. We have been wanting to change up our stout recipe and get a new variety on board, and ‘Hello World’ looked very promising. We are hoping to get a soft, chocolatey, full-flavored oatmeal stout without an assertive roast. With some minor tweaks to make it work on the Culver system and scaling it from 40 pounds of grain to over 950 pounds. [Owner] Ben Fairweather and I have homebrewing roots that we were able to channel into Culver Beer Co. and it’s nice to revisit the community that we were once a part of. Jacob and David were great assistant brewers and were able to help out on the brew day. “
Mike Stevenson, Head Brewer, Culver Beer Co.
Getting to brew my recipe with Culver Beer Co. was an amazing experience. Mike and Ben were super-friendly and happy to answer all my questions about homebrewing and commercial brewing. Being able to take part in the experience first-hand was invaluable…and tons of fun. It already has me considering how I can apply this experience to my future brew days. I can’t wait to share this beer with everyone.”
