Recipes: The Apprentice & Homework #6
Societe Brewing and Home Brew Mart share recipes for an iconic IPA and memorable robust porter
As part of our San Diego Homebrew Summer program, every Monday between now and the end of August, San Diego Beer News will publish homebrew-scaled recipes for beers professionally produced by craft breweries throughout the county. Today we start off with one of the original beers that graced Societe Brewing’s beer board when the Kearny Mesa company debuted in 2012, The Apprentice IPA. Piney and citrusy, it’s an ode to the OG West Coast IPAs that paved the way for hop-centric operations like Societe. And acting as a delicious foil to that beer is an award-winning robust porter from Home Brew Mart that was sold in bottles several years ago and remains a special creation for that famous homebrew supply outlet.
The Apprentice West Coast IPA
Q&A with Societe Brewing co-founder and CEO Doug Constantiner
Why did you decide to share this particular recipe?
The Apprentice was one of the first IPAs we made and was a staple Societe beer for our first five-to-six years. Over time, sales dropped and, unfortunately, we had to stop making it year-round, so I thought it would be fun for homebrewers who are fans of this beer to get a chance to recreate it at home!
What are some tips you have for homebrewers?
Relax, don’t worry, have a homebrew.
Please share a memory from your homebrewing days?
My favorite homebrew experiences were always going to brew with friends on their systems. I was able to learn how brewers do things in different ways and still make excellent beer.
How did homebrewing lead you to want to make brewing your career?
Homebrewing was the natural progression from beer fan to the question, “How can I lean more about beer?”, and the answer, “I’ll make it!”, which thankfully didn’t quench my thirst and led me to choose this as my career.
Homework #6 Robust Porter
A summary from Home Brew Mart Assistant Manager Derek Lauridsen
This recipe won third place at the National Homebrewers’ Conference in 2015 and was selected as the sixth installment of our limited “Homework Series” of beers that we released in 22-ounce bottles. This series was meant to inspire prospective homebrewers by having the actual homebrew-scaled recipe printed right on the label!
San Diego Homebrew Summer is brought to you by our partners at Ballast Point Brewing, and you can find all of the ingredients to make this pair of beers at Home Brew Mart.
