Recipes: AleSmith IPA & Awkward Morning

Demystifying AleSmith's West Coast classic and Home Brew Mart's Scottish ale

As part of our San Diego Homebrew Summer program, every Monday between now and the end of August, San Diego Beer News will publish homebrew-scaled recipes for beers professionally produced by craft breweries throughout the county. This week, AleSmith Brewing is sharing the secrets behind one if its, and San Diego’s, most iconic beers of all time, AleSmith IPA. With no shortage of beloved, award-winning beers in its portfolio, the Miramar brewery took to social media to ask fans which recipe they wanted most and this West Coast hop-bomb came out on top. On the maltier side of the spectrum, Linda Vista’s Home Brew Mart is offering up a recipe for its Scottish-style ale, Awkward Morning. Tamer than its name implies (it’s not a Scotch ale, after all), it’s darker yet highly drinkable and perfect for the fall season that’s right around the corner. Scroll down to download both of these recipes, the ingredients for which are available at Home Brew Mart so you can try them out at your place.

AleSmith IPA

Q&A with AleSmith Brewing Director of Brewery Operations Ryan Crisp

Why did you decide to share this particular recipe?

We put the question to our social-media followers and they voted for AleSmith IPA.

What are some tips you have for homebrewers?

Oxygen will destroy the aroma of this beer, so do whatever you can to prevent it from being introduced into your process.

Please share a memory from your homebrewing days?

I have a fond memory of my first homebrew club meeting as part of QUAFF (Quality Ale and Fermentation Fraternity). It was awesome to see so many people with the same interest in one place.

How did homebrewing lead you to want to make brewing your career?

I found that the more I homebrewed, the more I became interested in the local craft-beer scene. This led me to visit as many of the local breweries as I could. It was on one of those visits that I met AleSmith’s owner, Peter Zien, who brought me on as an intern.

Awkward Morning Scottish-style Ale

A summary from Home Brew Mart Assistant Manager Derek Lauridsen

Fashioned from a love of Scottish ales and Scotch whiskey, this uniquely smoky Scottish ale was featured at Homebrew Con and the National Homebrew Competition when nit was first brewed at Home Brew Mart. It also makes for a much kinder approach to recovering from a hungover morning than a Bloody Mary.

San Diego Homebrew Summer is brought to you by our partners at Ballast Point Brewing, and you can find all of the ingredients to make this pair of beers at Home Brew Mart.
