Recipe: Wheat Is Tight

The brothers behind Blue Fire Brewing offer up an NEIPA ideal for experimentation

Our second-annual Homebrew Summer program had such a fantastically high level of participation from San Diego County breweries—with over 30 of them taking part—that we’ve had to extend it into the fall. So you can keep checking back to San Diego Beer News each week for homebrew-scaled versions of popular beers from local brewing companies, as well as recipes from homebrewers that are being produced on a professional scale and put on tap around town.

Next up on the professional-to-recreational info-sharing train is the recipe for Wheat Is Tight. A juicy IPA from family-run San Marcos op, Blue Fire Brewing, it is (as you may have surmised) brewed with wheat and serves as a solid base for hazy experimentation. Fittingly enough, it comes from brothers Tommy and Charles Gordon, who started off homebrewing together before going pro.

A ‘juicy IPA’ beer has been on-tap since we opened last summer, and customers love it for it’s clean, hop-forward yet approachable characteristics. In our homebrew days, we loved to play with different ingredients to see how they would impact the resultant beer. This juicy IPA recipe creates an approachable, flavor-forward IPA that is an excellent base for experimenting with. From base malt to hops to yeast, changing these variables will yield unique but undoubtedly quaffable results. Happy brewing!”
