Homebrew Summer provides opportunity for long-time friends to hit the brew deck

As part of our second-annual Homebrew Summer program, various San Diego County breweries have teamed with amateur brewers to produce their homespun recipes on their commercial systems, then tap the resultant beers in their tasting rooms.

Today’s homebrewer-to-homebrewer contribution sprung from a friendship dating back over a decade. Like may solid relationships, this one is based around and amplified by beer, but more specifically the production of beer. Oceanside Ale Works owner Mark Purciel has been having brewing convos with longtime friend and fan Tom Chandler for what feels like forever, so it was only natural that, after hearing about Homebrew Summer, he hand-select his beer bud for participation. Together, they brewed a West Coast IPA Chandler came up with for a brewing competition. That beer will hit the taps at OAW on Saturday, September 10. In the meantime, we have the recipe queued up and ready for you to download below.

Check back to San Diego Beer News throughout the summer for more recipes as well as release dates for other pro-am beers. It’s shaping up to be a great summer for homebrewers and beer fans alike, and we’re stoked to have you along for the ride!

In ’91, when I started homebrewing, I wished there was an opportunity to brew with a pro. However, back then there were not very many breweries around. A few months ago [SDBN Executive Editor] Brandon Hernández sent me an email about a summer pro=am. Enter Tom Chandler, a good buddy of mine for well over a decade and an avid homebrewer. We chat about music, travels and, of course, brewing and beer. Once the opportunity arose, we took it hook, line and sinker. After many brews, we decided to do a West Coast IPA. With all the different IPAs available, we thought it would be prudent to highlight a style that flourished here in SD. This brew is a bitter ass-kicker and it ain’t afraid to show it! When brewers say West Coast IPA, it means high-bitterness, bold and hoppy aromas, and citrus or piney resin flavors. In my humble opinion, Gypsy Trucker checks all the boxes.”

It was an honor to be selected to participate in the pro-am event. I’ve known Mark as a friend and brewing mentor for the last 15 years. I brewed Gypsy Trucker for the last homebrew festival. The day we brewed it at OAW was an unreal day for me. I’ve been brewing since 2004, but never thought one of my beers would be produced by a commercial brewery. So I went through the day starry-eyed and walking on air despite a back problem I was experiencing at the time. Adding the hops and breathing in the aroma was intoxicating by itself. The whole experience was a homebrewer’s dream come true.”
