Recipe: Beer of the Rising Sun
A rice-infused international lager recipe washes ashore at Pacific Beach AleHouse
Our second-annual Homebrew Summer program had such a fantastically high level of participation from San Diego County breweries—with over 30 of them taking part—that we’ve had to extend it into the fall. So you can keep checking back to San Diego Beer News each week for homebrew-scaled versions of popular beers from local brewing companies, as well as recipes from homebrewers that are being produced on a professional scale and put on tap around town.
Next up on the professional-to-recreational info-sharing train is the recipe for Beer of the Rising Sun, an international-style lager from Pacific Beach AleHouse. A favorite sunny-day crusher at the beachside brewpub (and former San Diego Beer News Beer of the Week), it’s the perfect contribution for our extended Homebrew Summer and a sunny season that’s holding on well into autumn. Check out the recipe below and download it so you can give it a go DIY-style.
I chose to share Beer of the Rising Sun because it is a light, crisp and easy-to-drink beer that is perfect for a summer day. The style is more bitter than the average lager. By using Centennial hops, there is a nice floral and lemon character that is pleasing and refreshing. Rice makes the beer light on the palate. Brewing at PB Alehouse and being right at the beach, it just makes sense to have a solid day-drinker. A lower ABV (alcohol-by-volume) means you can have more than one. It is fermented cold and should be served cold, too.”
