New life – and breakfast beer – for San Marcos brewpub

Couple behind popular 35-year-old restaurant Mama Kat’s is preparing for exciting next chapter at former home of My Yard Live Beer Co.

Craft Q&A Placard 2026

It’s rare for mom-and-pop restaurants to remain in business for 35 years, and even rarer for such establishments to maintain a high degree of popularity over that span. Having done both, one would think Michael and Kristen Herrera, the couple behind San Marcos breakfast-brunch hot-spot Mama Kat’s Restaurant & Pie Shop, were on top of the world. But in early 2025, with only one year remaining on their lease for a location that was too small and, as a result of soaring operational costs, unprofitable, they were beside themselves. They needed more out of their restaurant but had already pushed the 4,500-square-foot space to its limits. Feeling there was no way to make it long term in their longtime San Marcos Boulevard strip-mall location, it looked as though their only option would be to close the business they had worked so hard to maintain since taking it over in 2005 (when it went by the moniker Grandpa Allen’s). Then came salvation in the form of a 17,500-square-foot brewpub just a mile away, the former home of My Yard Live Beer Co. Equipped with a larger kitchen, oodles of dining and event space, a 10-barrel brewery, an indoor-outdoor bar, kids’ play area and triple the parking of their original space, it was all the Herreras could have hoped for and more. So they put in a bid, crossed their fingers and waited anxiously for it to be accepted. They were scared to get their hopes up, but unable to keep themselves from dreaming of all they could accomplish if given the chance. Then came the call – the space was theirs. All that was left to do was start the long process of moving in and making it their own, something they’ve been hard at work on for nearly a year. Today marks the last service at the San Marcos Boulevard location, with building inspections taking place at the new spot later this week. The Herreras are officially in the crunch-time phase, but Kristina was kind enough to chat with us about Mama Kat’s new home and what visitors can expect from the second coming of their popular eatery.

What did it feel like landing your new restaurant space?
What a whirlwind range of emotions for our family. We had only known one way to be successful in one building, and now we were going to be able to grow in ways we could only have dreamt of. Being in the My Yard Live space means that not only can we do what we already do the things that made us popular with more efficiency and ease, but we can add in live music, car shows, banquets and private events, craft cocktails and brewing beer, just to name a few. We are going from optionless to endless options with this move and we don’t take for granted what a great opportunity this is to provide the community with a space that brings us all together.

How have you changed up the space?
When we got the space, we figured we could move in within four days, do almost nothing and make it work as-is. What fools we were. Once we got the keys, the ideas started rushing in. We wanted to utilize every inch to create something we long needed and were never going to be able to do at our original space. Hence, we added a barista station with five heads and a cafe to enjoy your drink, a waiting area that feels like someone’s living room and a banquet room built for memory-making. The dining room is similar to our current location, with booth seating, including a private family-sized booth central to the building for a unique dining experience, and a counter to provide an old-school diner feel. Outside, we rebuilt the gazebo over the stage so we can bring back live music and events. We replaced artificial grass with decomposed granite, made repairs to some outdoor structures, and built a large pergola and a pond with a waterfall.

What have you done to bring the feel of the old restaurant to your new digs?
The old Mama Kat’s was a collection of homey vintage charm with bright colors and antiques. We’ve updated the charm, continuing the vintage aesthetic and old-world charm, while introducing rustic farmhouse elements, plus a splash of Art Deco and industrial. The most important detail we’re introducing is an ode to what San Marcos once was. We worked closely with the San Marcos Historical Society to decorate the wall with framed pictures of the city from its conception; photos of our founding farms, oldest buildings, first airports and the people who lived here. We wanted to show our growing community where we came from and give it the respect it deserves.

Will the new location allow you to expand your culinary offerings?
Oh yes, in so many ways. For one, up until 2020 we offered a popular lunch menu. Getting to revive that will honor our roots. Additionally, we get to expand our ideas for more culturally-inspired food, appetizers, plant-based offerings and catering options. At the current location, we’ve been confined to such little cooking space and storage that we could only ever explore the occasional special or develop a menu item that we had hoped someday we’d get to find space to add.

What is your plan as you wade into the subculture of craft beer?
We are looking to start with a beer that we dare add the word “breakfast” in front of; something that we feel is an untouched market. We will be taking our time embarking on that adventure, making sure we understand it, respect it and have the right team in place to execute on the dream. We’ll also be looking forward to reaching out to other local breweries and showcasing them on our lines, providing them the opportunity to branch out in the community and fortify their brands.

Will you be expanding your hours of operation?
We will be expanding an hour or two later into the day for the lunch crowd. Once we have our footing we will explore options like early morning quick-grab cafe and coffee options an hour before service. We will also be looking at being able to host a happy-hour crowd to offer cocktails and appetizers to the working community that need a place to relax after a long day. On top of that, we hop to host one-to-five special events per month, things like corporate events, school functions, baby or bridal showers, birthday parties, anniversaries and maybe even the occasional small, intimate wedding.

Is it at all overwhelming to take over a space that’s so much larger than its predecessor?
We aren’t just a business, expanding or growing into a new space. We are a couple who fell in love as teenagers working within the same walls we are now leaving behind, well before we took over as owners. The same walls we’ve moved and remodeled in order to expand in the space where we’ve raised our daughters to become the people they will be in this world. So we don’t take this opportunity lightly. We are scared out of our minds to attempt the unknown. The only guarantee is that we have practiced doing the things that take bravery, hard work and dedication to each other. Together with a hand-picked team, we hope to make the next 20 years of this lease a branch of the legacy that honors the last 30 years.
