Homebrew Summer: What’s Cooler Than Being Cool? Ice Cold!
The longest-running supporter of our Homebrew Summer program, Home Brew Mart, fires up their system to produce a pro-am cold IPA

Aptly, no local brewing institution has been more involved in our five-years-strong Homebrew Summer program than Home Brew Mart (HBM). Not only has veteran shop-keep Derek Lauridsen transcribed each and every one of the nearly 100 homebrew recipes we’ve published on this site, scrutinizing each and often times playing a key role in helping ensure their accuracy. On top of that, HBM has teamed with homebrewers to bring their amateur recipes to life. The latest recreational fermentationist to take a round on the HBM brewhouse is Kevin Stamer, whose recipe for a cold IPA called What’s Cooler Than Being Cool? Ice Cold! is not just a mouthful, but is also currently on tap at the Morena homebrew supply outlet. Whet your appetite for that pro-am delight by downloading the recipe for it below.

When the opportunity came to submit a recipe for Homebrew Summer, I had to submit my cold IPA. I think the general style and this particular recipe make for a perfect summer beer. It’s crisp, refreshing and hop-forward, but without the the big malt backbone found in traditional IPAs. Coupled with clean-fermenting 34-70 yeast, you just can’t beat it. When developing this beer, I leaned heavily on the OG cold IPA created by Kevin Davey at Wayfinder Beer to create the grist. With corn making up over a fourth of the grains, the sweetness complements the dryness from Pilsner malt. I am thankful to Home Brew Mart for selecting this and inviting me to come brew with them. HBM has been my go-to shop since I started brewing in 2014. We had a great time sharing stories from our early days of brewing and had plenty of laughs along the way. One of my biggest takeaways was that, whether brewing at home on a recreational level or on a commercial brewhouse, making beer is meant to be fun and enjoyable.

Owner, Home Brew Mart
We had a great time brewing with Kevin and were excited to partner with him to brew his cold IPA recipe. Under former manager Colby Chandler, Home Brew Mart was one of the pioneers in using a lager yeast strain to ferment an IPA recipe, a tradition we continue to this day. On top of that, if you’ve seen our draft list, you may have noticed that we love a good musical or lyrical reference for a beer name. (Great taste in music makes for great tasting beer!) Outkast‘s feel-good anthem for the 2000s should make for an equally feel-good brew sure to elicit a “hey ya!” upon tasting this beer.

New homebrew recipes and pro-am beer release information will be posted to our site throughout the summer, so check back with San Diego Beer News on a regular basis (or subscribe to our free weekly email newsletter and we’ll send all the recipes and release information straight to your inbox). Cheers and happy homebrewing!
