Homebrew Summer: Port of Coffee

Kearny Mesa's Hopnonymous Brewing rewards a regular's years of patronage by brewing up his coffee porter recipe

One of the greatest things about our Homebrew Summer program is when local beer companies are able to invite regulars from their barstools into their breweries to collaborate on something delicious. The latest instance of this phenomenon was Hopnonymous Brewing Head Brewer Hunter Mannix asking frequent customer Jason Clark to cook up a pro-am porter infused with java procured from popular local roastery, Mostra Coffee. It was as much a reward for Clark’s years of patronage as his recent graduation from a local college’s Fermentation Management certificate program, and that gift will keep on giving when the beer, Port of Coffee, debuts at the Kearny Mesa operation’s taproom next week. Prep for that release by perusing the recipe for the beer, which can be downloaded below.

New pro-am beers will debut weekly throughout the summer, so be sure to check back with San Diego Beer News on a regular basis (or subscribe to our free weekly email newsletter and we’ll send all the recipes and release information straight to your inbox). Cheers and happy homebrewing!

How does it feel to have your recipe selected to be brewed on a pro scale?
It is an honor to be selected to brew this beer with Hunter and the Hopnonymous team. I love this brewery, respect the brewer and was thrilled to get to brew this beer with them. I understand it will be the brewery’s first porter, and that is exciting. I like this recipe because I love coffee, and working with it as a brewing ingredient is fun. The name of the beer is a play on words from my time in the Navy, where I went to many ports and tried many different beers everywhere I went.

What led you to select this beer recipe?
The reason I chose Jason was because he has been a longtime patron here at Hopnonymous and he recently completed the brewing program at San Diego Mesa College. I said I didn’t want to do something hoppy this time around, so we chose an adjunct porter featuring some local coffee roasters.
