Homebrew Summer: Coconut Hazy

Mission Brewing's head fermentationist reunites with his Homebrew Summer partners from years past to brew up a tropically inclined IPA

While many of the local brewing companies participating in our Homebrew Summer program are teamed with their homebrew partners after blindly selecting their recipes from a bank of submissions, some pros choose to work with people they know. In the case of Mission Brewing Head Brewer Jeremy Castellano, this year he chose to reconnect with the same married couple he worked with in 2024. The trio share a a strong bond, the friendliness of which shows through in the pro-am beers they’ve crafted over the years, including this year’s creation, Coconut Hazy. An IPA infused with its namesake ingredient, the beer went on tap at Mission’s Miramar taproom last week, and the recipe for it is ready for you to download in both all-grain and extract format if you’d like to try your hand at brewing it on the home front.

Head Brewer / Senior Production Manager, Mission Brewing

After having a great time brewing Enlightenment with our homebrew friends M&M last Homebrew Summer, we couldn’t pass up an opportunity to brew with them again. Beer has always been about having good times with good friends, so when we thought about this year’s Homebrew Summer, it was obvious that we should look to a beer that has fond memories associated with it. As a result, we decided to build a new recipe for a coconut hazy IPA, designed to emulate the likes of Moonraker Brewing’s Amelia, for which the brewers had a great fondness. In the process, we made some tweaks to the design in an effort increase drinkability by toning down the sweetness and body while still presenting a coconut-forward beer. Using a clean hazy base of 2 row, oats and unmalted wheat, with minimal hot-side hopping, we made a smooth canvas for the post-fermentation addition of toasted coconut to shine. The result is a coconut-packed beer that avoids turning into liquid sunscreen. We’re happy to have this beer on tap and are already looking forward to next year’s collab!

It’s always a great time brewing with Jeremy and the Mission team. We’re stoked at how this beer turned out and are looking forward to enjoying many a pint over a barbecue and laughter with friends during this cruel summer heatwave. We’ve already chatted about next year and are looking forward to bringing some old favorites to life!
