Homebrew Summer: I’m Not Bitter, You’re Bitter

FYI, Miramar-based Fall Brewing will release an ESB it brewed with an award-winning member of homebrew club QUAFF at its HQ ASAP

When sharing the list of San Diego breweries participating in this year’s Homebrew Summer program, Fall Brewing wasn’t on it. But when we heard about their pro-am collaboration with local amateur Jeff Case to rebrew his competition-winning ESB, we were happy to add it to the docket. That English-style beer goes by the name I’m Not Bitter, You’re Bitter and features Muntons “Pale Planet” spring barley malt. The beer will debut as part of an event organized in coordination with Case’s homebrew club, QUAFF, at Fall’s Miramar headquarters, today at 2 p.m. Before heading out for a taste, scroll down to download the recipe for this “extra special” beer.

I’ve been homebrewing since 1999, but having one of my recipes scaled up on a professional system is still a rare and humbling experience. This is only the second time it’s happened. Both opportunities came after I joined QUAFF in 2019, and I’m incredibly grateful for the connections and experiences that have followed. Rob was an absolute pleasure to work with: knowledgeable, generous with his time and just a great guy all around. Fall makes some fantastic beer, and it was fascinating to see some of the creative and thoughtful approaches they bring to both brewing and the business side of things.

One of the great things about this opportunity was us getting to sit down and talk shop. Like many other professional brewers, I started out homebrewing. Talking with Jeff and hearing about his processes and passion was a welcomed reminder of my homebrewing roots. It was equally fun to discuss Fall’s processes and how I approach scaling up recipes, so it was a good learning experience for both of us. We’re excited to not only brew a great, lesser-seen style, but work with an accomplished and knowledgeable local homebrewer, celebrating a cornerstone of the brewing as a whole: collaboration.
