Homebrew Summer: A Californian in King Arthur’s Porter

Barstool conversations over local beer lead to the creation of one by Breakwater Brewing's new brewer and his longtime homebrew bud

Earlier this year, local brewer Josh Avina started working at Breakwater Brewing, crafting ales and lagers from its shared space at Vista’s CoLab Public House. Since then, he’s been enjoying the process of keeping fan favorites on the beer board while also introducing new creations. To spice up the latter activity, he recently invited a friend of his, Matt Allen, to produce his amateur recipe for a robust porter on a commercial scale. Now, that dark, delicious beer, A Californian in King Arthur’s Porter, is on tap for all to enjoy as the latest pro-am offering from this year’s Homebrew Summer program. Check out the downloadable recipe below, then make plans to get out and try the beer…or perhaps stay in and try making the beer at home!

Brewer, Breakwater Brewing

I have known Matt for half a decade, and had many beers with him in recent years. It was during conversations over beers that we talked about me brewing with him as part of Homebrew Summer. As Breakwater’s new brewer, I wanted to produce a style I haven’t seen on our menu board before, and I thought Matt’s porter recipe was interesting after trying a bottle of the homebrew version.

Any tips for homebrewers using this recipe?
Paying attention to the pH throughout the brewing process is important. Watch your strike, sparge and knockout temperature.
