Homebrew Summer: Tierra Madre
Vista-born Mother Earth Brew Co. donates the homebrew-scaled recipe for a Mexican lager suited for summer...Homebrew or otherwise!

When Mother Earth Brew Co. opened in Vista in 2010, the then-nanobrewery was equipped not only with scads of taps pouring super-small-batch beer, but also a homebrew supply store. While the company has grown into a much larger operation, it maintains its connection with amateur fermentationists by participating in our Homebrew Summer each year. This year, Mother Earth is contributing a homebrew-scaled recipe for one of its popular core beers, Tierra Madre. An insanely quaffable Mexican-style lager, it’s perfectly suited for summer and you can brew it yourself using the all-grain and extract recipes they’ve generously provided below.

This is one of over 20 beers we’ll be sharing recipes for throughout the summer, so be sure to check back with us often. Or, if you prefer, you can sign up for our email newsletter, and we’ll send all of the recipes directly to your inbox. Cheers to homebrewing and another fun Homebrew Summer!
Chris Baker
Director of Brewing Operations, Mother Earth Brew Co.
We chose to contribute the recipe for Tierra Madre because it’s the ultimate summer refresher: light, crisp and refreshing. Not only is it one of our fastest-growing brands, but it’s a brewer favorite that we wanted to share with the homebrew community. Brewing a lager with a clean fermentation that lacks off-flavors and contains brilliant clarity should prove to be a fun and challenging task for brewers of all levels. Pro tip: Allow plenty of time for diacetyl rest, and use finings and optional filtrations for brilliant clarity.
